Magnolia Plantation & Gardens: A History of Love

Nothing says romance more than a destination wedding that is steeped in history and nature. And for those for whom American history and nature is the clarion call, then Magnolia Plantation & Gardens near Charleston, South Carolina is your only choice for tying the knot.

Magnolia Plantation & Gardens has been stewarded by the Drayton family for 345-years. The Drayton family ownership of Magnolia actually began with a wedding. In 1679, an English colonist named Stephen Fox emigrated to Charleston. When his daughter Ann married Thomas Drayton several years later, Fox gave the young couple 402 acres as a wedding present. That land became known as Magnolia-on-the-Ashley.

At Magnolia Plantation & Gardens, the show-stopping attraction is the romantic garden – and it has been for centuries. The gardens were designed in the 1840s by Reverend John Grimké Drayton and have been a Charleston institution for 345 years. To wed surrounded by blooms that date back to the earliest days of the gardens, but also, no matter the season, experience the color, life, and vibrancy of camellias in winter; azaleas in spring; daffodils, magnolia, and gardenia in summer; Japanese maple, Sweetgum, and Tupelo in fall. Magnolia is truly a feast for all the senses.

And the property’s amazing venues and destinations each make for an incredibly unique experience. Whether you choose to marry in the Carriage House on the banks of the Ashley River; say ‘I do!’ under the Spanish Moss on the Live Oak Lawn; walk the aisle to overlook the gardens on the Piazza porch; or maybe even elope in the Summer Garden, Magnolia can host weddings of all varieties and scales all year round.
