6 Ways to Save on Your Wedding Budget

Our recent reader survey revealed that you, our beloved readers, want more tips on how to make your wedding a little easier on the piggy bank. And whatever our readers want, our readers get! 

While there are many basic to trim one's wedding budget—number of guests, getting married on a weekday, avoiding hotels—we've found some other inventive ways to not make your dream day a nightmare for your savings account.   

Involve your guests in producing your wedding: 

As we've heard say: "it takes a village." So, when it comes to planning your wedding, enlist your 'village.' Our circle of friends inevitably includes a range of creative talents all able to help with everything from the florals to the DJing. Ask these friends to gift you their creativity to help create a memorable wedding experience.  

Cater with friends and family-owned restaurants: 

Further to the point above, you no-doubt have someone who loves to cook among your friends. Ask them to take on the catering, especially if you're having a smaller wedding, which as we know, is rule #1 for bringing costs down. But, in the off chance that you're not surrounded by top-chefs, go to your local, family-owned restaurant and have them create an inexpensive menu that their smaller staff and kitchen can deliver for you. 

Host at home or nearby: 

You aren't going to find a more affordable venue that your own backyard, but sometimes that backyard is a beloved park or outdoor haunt. (These public spots might require a small permitting fee, but it will be far less expensive than a venue rental.) And consider a daytime wedding which allows for a more casual meal. Who doesn't love a picnic?!

Hire students: 

While there is some risk to working with less experienced talent, students attending local universities or art colleges are a great resource for photography and entertainment. However, hey will be meaningfully committed to a big break like your wedding. 

Rent the runway: 

Covid has made life decidedly more casual, but your wedding might still want to pull out all the fashion stops. That doesn't mean you should pay retail. Look at sites like Rent the Runway, stores like The RealReal, or even your local second-hand shop to find a dream outfit that can (almost) serve as your "something borrowed (or rented!?)" You can also turn to J. Crew, our favorite, for tailored suits and tuxedos at attainable prices.  

Thrift your décor: 

You, your creative friends, or your art school designer can scour local markets, thrift stores and even small caterers and restaurants to find décor for your big day. Or if you live in a city that has a film or theater scene, consider looking into prop houses! Some of the items you might be able to return or resell, others simply borrow, but there is no need to buy or rent a load of items that you'll only use once.
